ingredients
Steps
Prepare Potatoes
Peel the potatoes, cut them into larger pieces, then boil them in salted water until tender (about 20-25 minutes). Drain thoroughly and mash them while still warm with a potato masher or fork to avoid lumps.
Make the Dough
To the warm, mashed potatoes, add the grated cheese, egg, 2 tablespoons of flour, salt, pepper, sweet paprika, and nutmeg. Knead thoroughly until you get a homogeneous, well-formable dough. If it's too soft, add a little more flour.
Form and Bread Balls
Form walnut-sized balls from the mixture. Prepare three plates: one with the remaining flour, one with the beaten egg, and the third with the breadcrumbs. Roll the balls first in flour, then in egg, and finally in breadcrumbs.
Fry the Balls
Heat a generous amount of vegetable oil in a deep pot over medium heat (to about 170-180°C or 340-350°F). Once the oil is hot, fry the potato balls in batches until golden brown, about 3-5 minutes. Remove them to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve immediately!
Extra Tips
► Ensure your mashed potatoes aren't too watery, otherwise, it will be harder to form balls. If it's too soft, add a little more flour.
► Use a neutral-flavored oil for frying, such as sunflower or canola oil, and make sure it's at the right temperature.
► Serve them fresh and hot, perhaps with a garlic sour cream dip or ketchup.
