Steps

1

Activate Yeast

In a small bowl, combine the lukewarm milk/water with the sugar and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the yeast activates and becomes frothy on top.

2

Knead Dough

In a large bowl, mix the flour with the salt. Add the activated yeast mixture and knead into a soft, elastic dough. If it's too sticky, add a little more flour; if too dry, a little more milk/water. Cover with a kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for about 60-90 minutes, until it doubles in size.

3

Shape Lángos

Once the dough has risen, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and divide it into 6 equal portions. Form each piece into a ball, then, with oiled hands, stretch them into thin discs about 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) in diameter. Leave the center slightly thicker.

4

Fry and Serve

In a deep pan or pot, heat a generous amount of vegetable oil over medium-high heat (about 170-180°C / 340-350°F). Carefully place the Lángos into the hot oil and fry both sides until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove them and place on paper towels to drain excess oil. Crush the garlic, mix it with a little oil or water, and brush it over the hot Lángos. Serve with sour cream and grated cheese.

Extra Tips

Lángos is best enjoyed fresh and warm, straight from the pan.

If you don't have fresh yeast, you can use 7g of active dry yeast, mixing it directly with the flour.

Experiment with toppings! Try it with garlic oil, or even jam for a sweet version.
