Fasírt is a true classic in Hungarian cuisine, a simple yet incredibly flavorful fried meat patty that everyone loves. Made from seasoned ground pork, soaked bread, and aromatic spices, it's a staple in Hungarian home cooking. Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, Fasírt is incredibly versatile, perfect served with mashed potatoes, rice, or a fresh salad.

Steps

1

Prepare and Mix

Soak the stale white bread in cold water for about 5 minutes, then squeeze out all excess water thoroughly. In a large bowl, combine the ground pork, squeezed bread, egg, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, salt, black pepper, and sweet paprika powder. Mix thoroughly with your hands until you have a uniform mixture.

2

Form Patties

With wet hands, shape the mixture into about 8-10 uniform, flat patties. Ensure they are not too thick so they cook evenly.

3

Fry the Patties

Heat 3-4 tbsp of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Place the patties in the hot oil (in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding the pan) and fry each side until golden brown and cooked through, about 4-6 minutes per side. Once cooked, transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

4

Serve

Serve immediately while hot, for example, with mashed potatoes, stewed vegetables, or a fresh salad.

Extra Tips

For an even richer flavor, sauté the finely chopped onion and minced garlic in a little oil before adding them to the meat mixture.

If you want extra crispy Fasírt, roll them in breadcrumbs before frying.

Make a larger batch; Fasírt is delicious cold in sandwiches or with a salad.
