Taiyaki is an iconic Japanese sweet, baked in a fish-shaped mold and traditionally filled with sweet red bean paste (anko). Its crispy exterior, soft interior, and sweet filling make it irresistible. It's perfect as a snack, dessert, or a special breakfast treat. Make this charming and delicious Japanese delicacy at home and bring the flavors of the Far East to your kitchen!

Steps

1

Prepare the Batter

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and sugar. In a separate bowl, beat the egg, then add the milk and water. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until smooth and lump-free. Do not overmix! Let the batter rest for 10 minutes.

2

Cook the Taiyaki

Preheat your Taiyaki pan over medium heat and lightly grease it with vegetable oil. Pour a small amount of batter into both sides of the mold, just enough to cover the bottom. Place a tablespoon of Anko paste on one side, then pour a little more batter over the filling to cover it.

3

Bake and Flip

Close the mold and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and the batter is cooked through. Carefully remove the finished Taiyaki from the mold and repeat the process with the remaining batter and filling. Serve warm!

Extra Tips

If you don't have a Taiyaki pan, you can make them in a regular pancake pan, though they won't be fish-shaped.

Anko paste can be bought ready-made in Asian grocery stores, or you can make it at home from dried adzuki beans.

Do not overmix the batter; mix only until just combined for the softest texture.
