Preheat your oven to 180°C (160°C for fan-assisted ovens). Grease a medium-sized ovenproof dish with butter. Slice the crescent rolls (kifli) into approximately 1-1.5 cm thick rounds.

Milk and Poppy Seeds

In a saucepan, gently heat the milk with the granulated sugar and vanilla sugar (or vanilla extract) until the sugar dissolves. Do not boil. In a separate bowl, mix the ground poppy seeds with the grated lemon zest and optional rum.

Spread half of the sliced kifli rounds evenly over the bottom of the greased dish. Pour half of the warm milk over them, then sprinkle with half of the poppy seed mixture.
